Thornbury v Widden Old Boys - (Won 40-12) |
Thornbury travelled to Widden in the last of the Gloucester Cup pool matches trying to secure their first win. From the kick off Thornbury were robbed of possession and Widden's strong inside centre ran strongly to open the home side account (0-7). A rather ominous beginning but Thornbury were soon back on terms when a three-quarter move saw winger Witter outpace his opposite number to score in the corner (5-7). Widden's indiscipline cost them dear - Mallard kicked 2 penalties, the second one following an altercation which saw the Widden full back sent from the field for punching (11 -7). Witter rubbed salt in the wound with a second almost identical score (18-7). The man advantage told in the second half with Thornbury running in 4 tries. The first from winger Troughtman (23-7) followed by 2 from no 8 Bradley. His first diving through a maul on the Widden line (28-7) and the second, somewhat a gift when he fielded a clearing kick in front of the posts (35-7). The best try was well crafted by the backs and saw clever interlinking play between centres Burns and Downman before the former scored. Widden rallied late with a consolation try from sloppy Thornbury defence (40-7). Thornbury took full advantage of their superiority but will have to improve in the next round particularly with their tackling.

Thornbury v Bristol / St Brendan's - (Won 15-10) |
Thornbury turned up to play a combined St Brendan's and Bristol side at the Academy ground. In the first half Thornbury were facing an uphill battle into the wind. Bristol played an expansive game and had the better opportunities out wide and a free flowing attack saw their winger crossed in the corner for an unconverted try (0-5). The Thornbury forwards with Ash, Yeates and Ridge were prominent in their loose and with Boulton winning more than his fair share of the lineout ball Thornbury were able to keep Bristol at bay and restrict them to a single score. Full back Moore fielded kicks well and was able to return the ball with some good running. After half time and with geography in their favour, Thornbury exerted considerable pressure on the Bristol line. No 8 Yeates broke from a scrum and when his forward momentum was stopped, flanker Smith was on hand to surge further forward before scrum half Edgar scrambled over the line (5-5). Bristol managed to break away several times but fly half Mallard was able to use his covering speed to make a couple of try saving tackles. Tactically Thornbury were astute, relieving kicks from Mallard in his 22, keeping the ball alive, with a good chase penned Bristol back deep in their half. Strong running from Mallard, Burns and Downman failed to pierce the Bristol defence but it was the forwards driving from a lineout who got the go ahead score. Locks Boulton and Windeatt both dotted the ball down together to claim a half try each! Bristol mounted a wide counterattack which proved sucessful to ltie the score(10-10). Thornbury soon regained the lead when stand in skipper Smith took a quick penalty to catch Bristol unaware to race through an unorganised defence to score the winning try (15-10).
