Our second big loss this season though the spirit of
the Thornbury rugby side was good and the players tried to the final
whistle. The match was played on St Mary's first team pitch and The St
Mary's side contained a few athletic and speedy players and were well able
to make use of a wide pitch to outflank the Thornbury defence. Only one of
the tries was conceded through forward play. Ridge had a good game at prop
and fullback Moore made some fine tackles. The Thornbury scrum was secure
and the lineout competed well but when St Mary's won the ball it was
difficult to stop their match winners.

Chipping Sodbury 7 - (3th
Dec 05)
sorry no photos
Thornbury were off to a quick start when Jenkins
slotted a penalty to give the away side the opening score (3-0). Chipping
Sodbury then fought back gamely and honours were even as the game ebbed
and flowed. Downman broke the deadlock forced his way over to score an
unconverted try (8-0). The match remained tight till half time with lock
Ash outstanding in the forwards. Thornbury nudged ahead when
Witter
picked a loose ball up in his own half and the speedy winger was able to
run through the defence to score, the try being converted by Jenkins
(15-0). Chipping Sodbury countered with a good try down the wing cutting
in to score under the posts (15-7). With the match in the balance,
Thornbury moved up a gear and started to pile up the points –
Bradley
forced his way over (20-7) and from a sustained period of forward pressure
Jackson scored (25-7) and then added his a second (30-7). Thornbury
sustained a number of injuries throughout the match and Dibble made his
debut and settled in well at scrum half with Sam Boss making e a
promising debut for the team. Eddie Stevens was man of the match .

Painswick 52 - (6th

This was a game of 2 halves in the real sense of the
phrase. Thornbury playing downhill for the first half went in at 10-5 up
and suffered severe setback when Painswick added 47 points in the second
half of the match. The wheels of the bus came off! Thornbury were out
muscled by some of the aggressive and larger Painswick forwards and were
not able to secure much possession. The tackling fell apart and tactical
awareness deserted. This was indeed a day to forget.

The U13
season can down to earth with a bump against a useful Clevedon side. After
an initial bright opening exchange, Thornbury moved the ball wide and
tested the Clevedon defence, which held resolutely. Thereafter with the
slope of the pitch behind them, Clevedon pinned Thornbury to their own 22
for a good proportion of the first half. The Clevedon fly half proved to
be a powerful runner and twice in the space of 5 mins was able to outflank
the Thornbury defence to score unconverted tries down both flanks. The
Thornbury tackling proved inept. Clevedon confidence grew strongly and
their pack started to dominate putting pressure on the Thornbury
halfbacks. Several kicks were charged down and eventually this led to a
third Clevedon score under the posts (0-17). Thornbury best attack came on
the stroke of half time when Jackson and Pope surged forward to put winger
Witter in space but the half time whistle went before the move could be
capitalized on. The second half started well for Thornbury with the solid
front row of Rehman, Jones and Finch supported by Bolton and Smith
competing well and taking on the Clevedon pack. Pope
Windeatt and Jackson dominated in the lineout. However, Clevedon
proved to be quicker at winning loose ball and were always able to clear
their lines. The Thornbury pressure started to tell and Clevedon became
rattled, eventually leading the referee had to warn them for repeated foul
play. From the resulting penalties Thornbury were unable to breech the
Clevedon defence despite good attempts from Carter and Jackson. The final
honours rested with Clevedon when in 2 swift counterattacks led by their
fly half resulted in unconverted scores (0-27).

Yatton 10 - (2nd
Oct 05)
Match photos
At the start of the match, Thornbury
were caught napping by a Yatton attack down the blindside and some poor
tackling allowed them an opening score (0-5). Thornbury edged their way
back into the match by applying pressure through their forwards and some
good mauling allowed Bradley to force his way
over to level the match (5-5). The scrums, solidly anchored with the front
row Finch, Jones and Rehman were solid, and a strike against the head
allowed the centres Stephens and Blake the opportunity of a counter attack
and swift handling gave sufficient room for winger
Whittingham to round his man to score (10-5). A similar move put
speedy winger Witter away on the opposite wing but he was tackled short of
the line. A second strike against the head allowed no 8 Jackson to pick
up, surge away and flanker Bradley was on
hand to take the pass to score the try, which was converted by Jackson
(17-5). Poor Thornbury tackling allowed Yatton back into the match with a
well-worked try again on the blindside (17-10). Some excellent tackling
from Thornbury fullback Moore thwarted several subsequent Yatton
opportunities. Turing round at half time Thornbury had the advantage of
the slope and cut loose with four further tries. Centre
Downman ran strongly to score between the
posts (24-10). Flanker Pope won a loose ball and with Jenkins and Downman
gaining ground, Moore was able to round the
defence (31-10). Fly half Jenkins, whose
kicking game was solid, grabbed an opportunist try taking a quick tapped
penalty close to the Yatton line to score (38-10). Jackson converted the 3
tries. Finally, Bradley broke away down the centre of the pitch and
combined with Smith to put winger Thompson
into the corner. The forwards had once again provided the platform but the
backs added another dimension to their game with good passing and strong
running. This has given the squad more confidence for the more difficult
challenges ahead this season.
Thornbury 19 Malvern
0 - (26th Sept

Match photos
This was Thornbury U13’s first
match of the season, and introduction to the 15 a side game suitably
played on the first team pitch. All the members of the 24-man squad played
for some of the match, which was split into 3 twenty-minute periods.
Thornbury started brightly with their forwards dominating the early
exchanges both in loose play and the scrums but the Malvern defence was
resolute with the first period deadlocked. Early in the second half after
a period of sustained pressure, centre Stevens was held up over the line
and from the ensuing 5m scrummage, scrum half Carter
weaved his way over to score a try between the posts (5-0). Thornbury,
buoyed with confidence, attacked repeatedly and when no 8 Jackson broke
from a scrum he put the backs into space and good handling allowed
fullback Dibble to score. Jenkins converted
(12-0). Jackson was rewarded for his strong
running with the third try after a barging solo charge down the middle of
the pitch, which Malvern were unable to stop. Jenkins, once again
converted (19-0). Whilst the foundation of the victory was paved by the
forwards, the match the whole squad contributed in their introduction to
the senior game and this augers well for the season.
